ORTEC launches Logistics Student Award
Published on October 31, 2007

Six students are competing for the ORTEC Logistics Student Award, a new ORTEC initiative designed to motivate students completing a degree in Applied Operations Research. Every year tens of students intern or conduct academic research while working at ORTEC. Only student employees of ORTEC are eligible to compete for the ORTEC Logistics Student Award, which, in addition to the prestige, includes a first prize of 500 euros and a second prize of 250 euros.
The participants in the ORTEC Logistics Student Award must submit an internship report or a master’s thesis. Of the six students competing, two will ultimately be nominated for the first prize. The winner will be announced during a festive event on November 10, 2007. The students’ research is evaluated based on its scientific value, the impact of its results in actual practice and its transparency.
Tips for future participants
“We want to challenge students and encourage them to do both their personal best and be the best in their field of study,” said ORTEC Director of Applied Operations Research, Dr. Bart Veltman. “Consider this extra motivation for their Applied Operations Research projects.” Bart Veltman also wants to give future participants a few tips: “Want to win? Then make sure your report or thesis is written in a precise manner. Be sure to clearly explain the practical application and its impact for the customer. After all, genuine innovation is only achieved when an original idea is applied in actual practice.”
The Logistics Student Award
Starting this fall, the Logistics Student Award will be awarded to ‘outstanding examples of Operations Research (OR) – based on research projects by ORTEC students’. All students who have completed their undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate thesis at ORTEC will be eligible to compete for the award at the end of the academic year by submitting the results of their research in a report, such as a thesis or an internship report. The finalists will then be selected based on the submissions.
The jury
The 2007 ORTEC Logistics Student Award evaluation jury comprises: Dr. Joaquim Gromicho, Prof. Dr. G. Kant, John Poppelaars, Prof. Dr. G.T. Timmer, Dr. Bart Veltman.
The candidates
The candidates of the academic year 2006-2007 are:
- Anne de Koning, student at Utrecht University, conducted research in the practical value of new theoretical concepts for calculating the shortest paths and fastest routes much more rapidly than is currently possible. This is important for the routing of trucks and service providers, such as homecare professionals.
- Folkert de Young, student at the University of Groningen, researched whether there should be an operation room specifically for emergency cases at top clinical hospitals.
- Hanno Mulder, student at the University of Utrecht, conducted research regarding efficiency in large-scale and complex planning and scheduling updates and the corresponding performance indicators and regulation compliance checks.
- Rutger de Mare, student at Erasmus University Rotterdam, researched the feasibility of supporting and optimizing transport between refineries and (oil) depots using Operations Research techniques.
- Arjan Hoendervoogt, student at Tilburg University, conducted research into the determination of delivery frequencies and areas for recurring (or continuous) flows of goods and their application in the Beverage industry, waste processing and Reverse Logistics.
- Matthijs Bijl, student at the University of Twente, researched staffing for sessions (such as court sessions), consultations and treatment sessions within the healthcare sector.
