BBNN counts on a better overview of its staff scheduling with ORTEC scheduling systems

Bevolkingsonderzoek Borstkanker Noord Nederland (BBNN – screening for breast cancer in the north of The Netherlands) has signed up for the implementation of ORTEC’s master schedule system HARMONY. BBNN has also decided to implement Service Engineer Planner (SEP), the ORTEC system for the scheduling of field staff, to support its teams that perform breast examinations at various locations in the north of The Netherlands.

Optimization of travelling distances

The initial aim of the implementation for BBNN is greater efficiency. With SEP, BBNN hopes to optimize and, where possible, reduce travelling distances between the staff and the nine mobile workstations. For example, currently, a laboratory assistant from Groningen may have to work at a mobile unit in Leeuwarden, while at the same time an assistant from Leeuwarden has to be at a post in Groningen(1). “We want to prevent this”, explains Loes Dunning, head of screening at BBNN.

“With HARMONY we gain a better overview of the scheduling and are able to introduce more structure into the organization. Furthermore, we will use the WebAccess module, which will also give people insight into their schedules from home.”

From eight planners to two

“At the moment, we still plan with Outlook”, says Loes Dunning. “This does work, but it is not reliable enough, especially when things have to be shifted in the scheduling. We can see that there are still a lot of benefits to be gained in this respect.” At BBNN there are currently eight team leaders responsible for scheduling. They each plan their own teams.

“We would like to have a better overview. One schedule that can be centrally controlled. With HARMONY/SEP, the scheduling could theoretically be performed by perhaps only two people”, says Loes Dunning.

Screening for breast cancer

Stichting Bevolkingsonderzoek Borstkanker Noord-Nederland (BBNN) is one of nine foundations in The Netherlands that performs breast cancer screening. The BBNN region consists of the provinces of Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe, north Overijssel, and a number of municipalities in the provinces of Gelderland and Flevoland.
